Dennis Wills (3rd December 2009) - "Seeing the article on Gosport fire station in the inaugural 'Stop Message' brought back some memories for me!  The year must have been 1954. I was out for a walk in Havant with my father and brother; we stopped at the old NFS station in West Street and my dad, being in the Portsmouth AFS, got chatting to the caretaker fireman George Lerwell. Alongside the two Austins, an ATV and a PE, he was tending a brand new AFS Green Goddess which he was about to take to Gosport. We told him our uncle was a SubO there.

"Do you want to come?", he said. Of course we jumped at the chance and off we went in the big Bedford and saw the new Gosport station for the first time. Uncle Hector was not on duty though. We came back on an ATV.

In 1963 I joined the AFS at Havant and soon found out that that 15-mile ride I had in the EP that day was nothing compared with what was to come. We could drive a couple of hundred miles in a weekend on exercises and the furthest I think we went was to a pump competition near Cheltenham! Other long trips were Moreton-in-Marsh and London Docks.

The 1948 Hampshire Fire Service had a competitions culture at that time; perhaps that might make a future article.

Mick Barnes (12th November 2009) - "There is more than just the front page of the Past Members web site. For instance click on ''Deals and Offers'', Then down to ''offers for just being you'' click on ''www.fireandrescue.discounts.co.uk you will be asked to register but it's free. You then have access to hundreds yes hundreds of discounts. I admit they are not always the cheapest but it gives you a chance to compare more deals. Also don't laugh but if you can bury your pride and follow ''links'' to the ''help the aged site'' you have access to loads of free advice which is of interest to retired people. Information on pensions etc.Just go and have a look for yourself nobody will know you have looked!!. As you can see it pays to look at the Past Members site on a regular basis."

Paul Webber (23rd August 2009) - "A quick note to say thank you to all those who helped put the inaugural meeting "hog roast" evening together. A great evening, albeit I'm not too good at remembering names but plenty of faces and stories to share. The hog roast and all the other food was fabulous. Karen and I enjoyed it very much. We even won a prize on the raffle!"

Bernie Searle (23rd August 2009) re Hog Roast - "Thank you for a great evening and the chance to meet up with some of the old crowd. It would appear that this was long overdue with the numbers that attended."
